Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) is one of the federal government’s programs for assisting low-income families, elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private housing market.  Housing assistance is based on household income, which is then provided on behalf of the family (or individual) to a landlord/property owner.

Voucher program participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments in the private housing market, within an affordable range based on bedroom side.  Once a unit is selected and approved by Auburn Housing, the tenant pays a portion of rent based on a percentage (typically 30%) of their household adjusted gross income and remaining rent is paid by the housing authority to the landlord/property owner.

Auburn Housing Authority has Section 8 Vouchers they currently administer in Auburn, Minot, Mechanic Falls, Poland, New Gloucester, and Turner.
